Hiram Percy
Whittingham
of 8 Riverside Terrace , Machen, enlisted on 23 February 1916 and
after basic training was posted to France with the British
Expeditionary Force on 20 November 1917. He suffered gunshot wounds
to the elbow and leg in July 1918 and was treated in the Military
Hospital at Wimereux before being transferred to the V.A.D. Hospital
in Dorchester on 7 July 1918.
He was discharged
from
the army, having been declared ‘no longer fit for war service’
on 1 November 1918 and was awarded the Silver War Badge (B3533) and a
war pension for his disability.
Hiram Whitingham
died
of tuberculosis at the age of 25 on 30 June 1920 in Colliers Row,
Machen.
