Died on Friday 11th, January 1918, Aged
20. Son of Joseph and Mary Anne Rees of Picton House Park Crescent,
Machen Newport Mon. Buried at Struma Military Cemetery, 65kms north
of Thessalonika.
The Battalion Diary for January records that the Division was stationed
near Turica and had been suffering the effects of heavy rain and
blizzards. On 11th January Major General Holt had been ‘inspecting
malarial patients’. It was on the 11th that Private Albert
Rees died of Blackwater Fever a, very severe complication of Malaria.
Private Albert Rees is also commemorated on a family memorial in
St Johns Churchyard, Machen.
