Died on Thursday 21st December 1916 Aged 35. Son of David and
Anne Morgan, of Pinrhiwgwial Cottages, Lower Machen.
In December 1916 the 1st Battalion of the South Wales
Borderers were serving in the Somme area. By the December 18th they
were near Mametz Wood and preparing to move off. The Battalion diary
records that at 1.30 P.M. they marched to front line positions,
relieving the 1st Battalion the Gloucester Regiment.
Front Line
Very hard frost owing to which movement was
easier..............heavy shelling by the enemy throughout the day in
retaliation for our bombardment of the MAZE . Turk Dump was shelled.
Here we lost several casualties while water was being drawn.
On the day when Private William Morgan and three others were
Killed in Action the battalion diary records; Fairly quiet day,
nothing to report.
Private Morgan is buried at A.I.F. cemetery, Flers, Somme,
France.
