Died on Thursday 4th July 1918. Aged 35. Son of Aaron and Mary Hannah
Johnson, of 2 Beach Cliff, Penarth, Glam. Native of Machen, Newport, Mon.
Trevor Holmes Johnson had served with the Territorial |Army between 1904
and 1906 (4th Battalion South Wales Borderers) He enlisted for war service
with the 2/13 Battalion, London Rgt in November 1914. At enlistment he
gave his home address as 23 Park Place, Mertyr Tydfil.
In April 1916 he sailed with his regiment for ‘security duty’
in Ireland following the Easter Rising. On June 22 1916 his regiment transferred
to France and duty on the Western Front.
While on active service as a Lance Corporal Trevor Johnson was Court
Martialed for; “negligence to the prejudice of military discipline:
in that on Friday August 18, 1916 did negligently use a live round of
Mark VII ammunition, in place of the dummy round, for the purpose of demonstrating
the working of a Lewis Machine Gun to a squad under his instruction, and
wounding in the right arm No 4470 Pte Schuler C.E. of the said squad,
by so doing.
Lance Corporal Johnson was sentenced to 14 days Field Punishment No 2
and 10 days confined to barracks. The sentence was more lenient than may
have been expected due to his “previous good character”.
In November 1916 he was transferred to Salonika and subsequently joined
the Army Service Corps, motor transport section.
On 29th June 1918 Private Johnson was admitted to No 60 general hospital
suffering from Malaria and died at 2.30 pm on July 4th 1918
Pte Trevor Holmes Johnson was buried at the Kirechkoi-Hortakoi Military
Cemetery, 2kms North East of Thessolonika and is also commemorated on
the Penarth War Memorial. His Service Record shows that he was the brother
of a Mary Woodruff,(see later entry). |
