Herbert Walter Hodges enlisted as a regular soldier on January
2nd 1915 aged 19 years 2 months. The attestation record describes him
as 5’ 10” with a fair complexion with brown hair and eyes. He gave his
occupation as farmer’s son. He served in France and Flanders with the
British Expeditionary force between 13th August, 1915 and 5th, June
1916 when his battalion returned to the U.K. During his service with
the B.E.F. his battalion fought in the Battle of Loos, in September
1915. Although Trooper Hodges was a cavalryman, he spent his service in
France in one of the Cyclists Battalions established within the
regiment.
Herbert Hodges married Florrie Darling at Caerphilly Parish
Church on 11th September 1916. He died of cerebro spinal fever and
septic mastoiditis at Fulham Military Hospital 12th January 1917
Trooper H.W.Hodges is buried at the Guards section of Brompton
cemetery, London.
